Coca-Cola Hellenic is the first company in the European drinks industry to be awarded an A+ for its 2010 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report. The Towards Sustainability 2010 report assessed performance across the company’s four key areas of stakeholder engagement: community, environment, marketplace and workplace. The report was evaluated independently by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
With a €200m investment in clean power generation, Coca-Cola Hellenic is committed to building combined heat and power (CHP) plants at its bottling plants. Installing a CHP unit allows for total carbon emissions to be reduced by up to 66 per cent at a bottling plant. There are CHP plants in operation in Northern Ireland, Italy, Hungary and Romania. A further five CHP plants are nearing completion at sites in Nigeria, Poland and Ukraine. “The CHP programme is at the heart of the company’s carbon reduction strategy and, once completed, will cut direct CO2 emissions by more than 250,000 tonnes a year,” commented Jens Rupp, group sustainability manager at Coca-Cola Hellenic. “The A+ rating is an objective verification that Coca-Cola Hellenic is fully measuring and disclosing its economic, environmental and social performance.”
