Conad To Stop Selling Eggs From Caged Hens
Italian supermarket chain Conad has announced it will stop selling private label eggs produced by caged hens by the end of 2017.
This follows similar decisions announced in recent months by rival retailers such as Carrefour Italia and Auchan Italia, and an announcement yesterday by Danish retailer Coop Danmark
Conad’s decision regards so-called 'category 3' eggs, i.e. those produced in cages. It will continue to sell three other categories of eggs: category 1 (in the open), category 2 (on the ground) and category 0 (organic farming).
The retailer said that the decision is motivated by ethical reasons. Although in line with current legislation, cage farms do not allow hens the freedom of movement to ensure their well-being.
Last year, Conad sold €35.2 million worth of eggs, a 3.2% growth on 2015.
