Continente Turns Surplus Food Into Preserves And Chutneys

Portuguese hypermarket chain Continente has developed a selection of preserves and chutneys made from end-of-life food products.

The retailer has started using leftover fruit and vegetables that are still in good condition to create new products for its private-label range, reducing food waste and promoting a sustainable supply chain.

This is the company's first circular-economy project, developed within the Missão Continente initiative.

Product Range

The product range currently consists of tomato preserve, pumpkin and walnut preserve, tomato and basil preserve, pepper chutney and onion chutney.

According to the CEO of Sonae MC, the company that owns the Continente hypermarkets, there are plans to launch additional product ranges in the future.
