Continente Introduces Private Label Custard Tarts

Portuguese hypermarket chain Continente has launched its first range of private label custard tarts made from 100% local ingredients.

The egg custard tarts, pastéis de nata, were created by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon and are one of Portugal's most famous sweet treats.

Local Produce

Continente's new custard tarts are made with locally sourced ingredients such as Alentejo flour, Azorean milk and Portuguese eggs.

The launch is the result of an initiative of the Clube de Produtores Continente (Continente producers club), which aims to promote products of Portuguese origin, while adapting production to customer demand.

The programme consists of 185 producers in the areas of fruits and vegetables, delicatessen, bakery and pastry, meat, fish and other categories, and seeks to develop strategic partnerships between producers and the retailer, with the goal of innovation and product differentiation.
