Coop Danmark Removes ‘Dirty Dozen’ Substances From Private Label Range

Coop Danmark has said that it has systematically removed 12 substances and chemicals that are deemed to be detrimental to either consumer health or the environment from its private label range.

The measure, which was commenced in 2015, is now complete, with all products under the Änglamark, fakta 365, Irma Økologi and Tusindfryd ranges now free from what the retailer has described as the ‘Det beskidte dusin’, or ‘Dirty Dozen’.

Packaging Measures

For example, new packaging is free from all bisphenols including bisphenol A, which is said to be harmful to the environment. Elsewhere, fluorinated substances have been removed from other products such as microwave popcorn and certain preservatives have been removed from products such as hand wash.

"We are proud that we are now targeting a number of our most important own brands," said Malene Teller Blume, quality manager at Coop Danmark, adding that the retailer wants to “show other manufacturers and retailers that it's possible to avoid these substances.”

The chemicals and substances to target were selected by Coop in conjunction with leading researchers and NGOs.
