NorgesGruppen, Coop Increase Market Share In Norway

Norwegian retail group NorgesGruppen has increased its market share in the country by 1.2% in the last six months, according to data from Nielsen.

"It's gratifying that we have a positive development in an increasingly tough grocery market," said Runar Hollevik, CEO of NorgesGruppen.

The group's Kiwi supermarket chain experienced a 1% increase in market share, growing to 21.1%, while Spar reached 7% (+0.2%), Joker 3.7% (+0.1), and Meny 10.6% (-0.2%).

In spite of its marginal decline in market share, Meny was voted the grocery chain with the most satisfied customers in the Norsk Kundebarometer 2017 consumer survey.

Coop Growth

Meanwhile, Coop Norway also increased its market share by 0.7% during the first half of the year, with its discount chain Extra reaching 1.4% market share.

"Coop has a formidable growth in comparable stores and the low price chains Extra and Obs are the growth winners in grocery Norway with 4.7% organic growth up to and including June," said CEO Geir Inge Stokke.

"In addition, fresh figures from Nielsen show that Coop continues to take market shares despite the fact that we have established fewer new stores than the competitors."
