  • OrriApp, the first app designed to identify exploitation in the value chain of the protected Orri mandarin, has been updated with new features.

The updated app will allow associates to notify the Orri Running Committee (ORC) about discrepancies in the identification and labelling of Orri mandarins in stores.

It will also allow better supervision of the mandarins at all levels in the value chain, from production to final distribution.

The first version of the app helped in identifying Orri mandarin from farms that did not have a production license for cultivating the fruit.

Orri mandarins have been the highest valued mandarin variety over the past years, with average prices that are 22% to 28% higher than the next most valued variety.

The mandarins have been recognised as a protected variety by the Community Plant Variety Office until 2043, giving licensees the exclusive right to grow the fruit for several decades.

Over 57,000 tonnes of Orri mandarins were distributed in the past season, exceeding the estimates for the 2019-2020 campaign.

The mandarins, ranked as 'the highest valued in the market' for the fifth year in a row, reached an average field price of €1.15 per kilogram.

The Huelva province in Spain claimed a market share of 31.09% of Orri mandarins, followed by Valencia at 21%, Murcia at 18.7%, and Almería at 9.08%.

Crops from the province of Castellón comprised 7.9% of the market share, while Alicante and Seville constituted 7.3 % and 4.9%, respectively.

Orri mandarins are known for exceptional qualities, such as ease of peeling, low seed content, extraordinary flavour, and long shelf life.

The Orri Running Committee is a non-profit organisation that brings together over 480 Orri mandarin producers.
