Coviran, Intermarché And Lidl Open New Stores in Portugal

Spanish retailer Coviran is expanding its presence in Portugal, with the opening of new two supermarkets.

One of these, the Gomos e Pedaços store, is located in the town of Marinheiros, in the district of Leiria. With a sales area of 100 square metres, it has a self-service butchery, delicatessen, fruit and bakery sections.

Elsewhere, the Poppy Supermercados store in Palmela (Setúbal) has 250 square meters of sales areas, two check out tills, and a butchery, delicatessen, bakery, fruit and fishmongers sections, as well as a cafeteria.

Coviran has a 0.85% share of the Portuguese retail sector, or 2.15% of the market of retail outlets smaller than 1,000 square meters. It operates over 300 supermarkets nationwide, of which 200 trade under the Coviran banner, with presence in 18 districts and in the two island autonomous regions (Azores and Madeira).

Hypermarket Opening

French retailer Intermarché has invested €4 million in a new hypermarket, located in Caldas da Rainha (Leiria), which boasts a sales area of 1,490 square metres.

The new store features a ‘traditional market’ concept, with areas dedicated to Fresh Products, Wine Cellar, Beauty and Pet Food. It also offers services such as a cafeteria, catering/take-away, self-service laundry, caravan park, electric car recharging, florist, ATM and pharmacy.

With its latest opening, Intermarché has reached 249 stores in Portugal.

Lidl On The March

Elsewhere, discounter Lidl is continuing with its project for renewing its store network, with the re-opening of two stores during November. One is located on Lisbon’s Avenida Lusíada (1,100 square metres), while the second is in Algueirão (Sintra).

Refurbishment carried out to the stores interior was mainly focused on making the shopping experience more pleasant and efficient. The bakery zone has also been redeveloped.
