SuperValu Introduces Eco-Friendly Herb Packaging

Irish retailer SuperValu has announced that it has introduced sustainable packaging within its potted herbs range.

The move will see the elimination of non-recyclable plastic packaging across the category, saving 3.18 tonnes of plastic packaging, the Musgrave-owned retailer said.

Paper Sleeve

The new packaging comprises a 100% recyclable paper sleeve on the outside, while the herbs have switched to a recyclable grey pot from a black pot.

An estimated 300,000 units of growing herbs are sold in SuperValu each year.

Potted herbs offered by SuperValu are certified as Irish-grown by Bord Bia and include coriander, basil, parsley, and rosemary.

Sustainable Packaging

The development of sustainable packaging for herbs is a part of SuperValu's commitment to making 100% of the group's own-brand, fresh produce, and in-store packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

Ian Allen, managing director, SuperValu, said, "With the removal of the plastic sleeve on herbs and non-recyclable black plastic we are moving ever closer to our goal of 100% sustainable packaging by 2025.

"So far, our changes to packaging have diverted 29.3 tonnes of plastic from landfill annually, a positive move that impacts every community we operate in around Ireland."
