British Retail Consortium Develops Cyber Security Toolkit

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has developed a cyber security ‘toolkit’, providing guidelines for the prevention and management of cyber attacks.

With e-commerce growing by up to 15 % per year and online spending currently estimated to be around 25% of the total customer spend, the guide aims to give retailers the practical know-how to protect themselves, and their customers.

The guidelines recommend retailers to prioritise cyber security, by completing a risk assessment and creating a response plan, to prepare them for potential attacks and provide a clear response, recovery, and reviewing protocol for incidents.

According to the BRC's Annual Retail Crime Survey 2016, around 53% of fraud, reported by the retail sector, falls under cyber crime, costing the sector an estimated £100 million per year.

Dr Ian Levy, technical director at the National Cyber Security Centre, commented, "The NCSC is delighted to be working with the BRC in finding innovative ways to make the UK a safe place for e-commerce, for citizens, small businesses and large chains".
