Dansk Supermarked Group To Phase Out Battery Eggs

Dansk Supermarked Group, which operates the Netto, Føtex and Bilka chains, has agreed to cease sourcing battery eggs for its stores, as part of an effort to improve animal welfare.

From 1 September, Føtex stores will stop selling battery eggs, with Netto and Bilka following next year. The group hopes to have phased out all purchasing of battery eggs by the end of 2017.

“Improving animal welfare is very important to us, and as Denmark's largest retail company, we take responsibility,” said Jeppe Dahl Jeppesen, fresh-food director at Dansk Supermarked.

The group is stepping up its sourcing from companies such as Hedegaard Foods, a free-range and organic egg supplier, signalling its intention to help the retailer take the next step.
