Carlsberg Chairman Calls For Sustainable Development

Flemming Besenbacher, chairman of Danish drinks company Carlsberg, has called for increased action against climate change at an event in New York this week.

“With pressing global issues such as climate change, we are living in a time of great risks and great opportunities," said Besenbacher, speaking at Climate Week NYC.

"I believe that the companies that will thrive in the coming decades are those companies that take action and contribute to sustainable development.”

As part of its commitment in this area, Carlsberg Group has launched a sustainability programme, Together Towards Zero, which aims to eliminate carbon emissions and halve water usage at its breweries by 2030. In addition, Carlsberg has joined 100 other businesses in the RE100 leadership initiative, in which it has committed to use 100% renewable electricity at its breweries by 2022.

Besenbacher said that these programmes "will ensure the scale and scope needed to create true durable positive change.”

Long-term Involvement

The Carlsberg chairman is going to join events at the United Nations and The World Economic Forum’s Sustainable Development Impact Summit to discuss the main issues surrounding climate change and sustainability with other parties.

Elsewhere, he added that the Carlsberg Foundation is making a DKK 500 million investment in carbon reduction, water conservation and sustainable food production.

“With this investment, the Carlsberg Foundation aims to make a difference by generating sustainable returns, which we can give back to society or reinvest in other impact funds," said Besenbacher.
