Coca-Cola To Launch Coca-Cola Life: Less Sugar, Fewer Calories

Coca-Cola has announced plans to bring a new version of its bestselling soft drink to the European drinks market. Coca-Cola Life boasts one-third less sugar than the standard offering, and one-third fewer calories.

First trialled in Argentina and Chile in 2013, Coca-Cola Life contains sweeteners made from natural ingredients. Using a mix of sugar and a natural stevia leaf extract, the 330ml can of Coca-Cola Life contains 89 calories compared to the standard Coca-Cola containing 139 calories. Packaging for the new product features striking green branding that will contrast with the familiar red packaging.

The plans follow recent industry moves to tackle obesity among adults and children. The drinks giant said the new offering would help meet its pledges made in relation to anti-obesity drives by governments. However, health experts said the product still contained more than four teaspoons of sugar per 330ml can – i.e. one quarter of a child's daily recommended maximum intake.

James Quincey, president of Coca-Cola Europe, said that the group was early signatories to the UK government's responsibility deal. “As we work with others across society to address the public health challenge of obesity in the UK and across Europe, we will continue to take actions that help people balance their lifestyles." Coca-Cola Light will launch in Europe in the autumn.
