Denmark Sets World Record For Organic Food Sales In 2019
Global organic food sales reached €106 billion in 2019, with Denmark at the forefront of this development.
The country booked the largest organic market share and Danes emerged as the leader in per-capita organic food sales, according to the annual report by the Swiss research centre FiBL and the international organic organisation IFOAM.
The report was released on the occasion of the opening of the digital edition of BioFach 2021, the world's leading trade fair for organic food.
Each Dane spent an average of €344 on organic products in 2019. This figure and along with the organic market share of 12.1% placed Denmark in the top position worldwide.
Pernille Bundgård, international market director at Organic Denmark, said, "Part of the explanation for the renewed world record is that organic food in Denmark is given a prominent place in traditional supermarkets."
"Another reason is that consumers around the world are increasingly demanding sustainably produced food," Bundgård added.
According to the FiBL report, there is greater potential for organic food because consumers are paying more attention to health, environment and the climate.
These factors have gained weight during the Covid 19 pandemic, FiBL added.
Although the current report does not include 2020 figures, the authors say that organic food sales increased sharply during the lockdown in many European countries.
Consumers spent more money on quality organic food when it was not possible to travel, eat out, or attend cultural events.
The largest global markets for organic food include the United States (€44.7 billion), Germany (€12 billion) and France (€11.3 billion).
Denmark has the highest organic share in the world at 12.1%, followed by Switzerland at 10.4% and Austria at 9.3%.
In Europe, consumers spent €56 per person on organic food in 2019, and €84 in the European Union.
The per capita consumer spending on organic food doubled between 2010 and 2019.
In 2019, the Danes and the Swiss spent the most on organic food - €344 and €338 per capita, respectively.
