French Region Sainte-Foy Bordeaux Awarded Appellation

L’Union des Côtes de Bordeaux has added a fifth 'appellation' to its range, Sainte-Foy Bordeaux, which will complement the existing Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon and Francs regions.

Reported by Aquitaineonline on Tuesday, an appellation is a legally defined and protected geographical term for the region in which the grapes for a certain wine are grown.

In its Journal Officiel on 24 November, the wine body announced that Sainte-Foy Bordeaux products would be able to carry the text ‘Côtes de Bordeaux’ on its labels. This is the first occasion that the body, created in 2007, has allowed a new Appellation d'Origine Contrôlé.

The decision is the product of seven years’ monitoring, inspection and ‘implementation of change’, according to Stéphane Héraud, president of the Côtes de Bordeaux union.

Christiane Deffarge, president of Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux, said that she is proud of her appellation’s wines and their quality, and said she was aware of the "limited impact" they had without the right to the ‘Côtes de Bordeaux’ signification.

"In joining the union, we will be able to benefit from its dynamism, promotional capacity, and export market links," she added.
