Italian Organic Wine Exports Increase 40% In 2016

Italian organic wine exports increased by 40% in 2016 compared to the previous year, reaching a market value of €192 million.

The figures are from the Nomisma wine monitor research, conducted on the occasion of the Bio Wine Day, which was organised by the Italian Export Promotion Agency.

Overall, sales of Italian organic wine reached €275 million, up 34% on 2015. The domestic market, considering all channels, accounts for 30% of the total (€83 million, +22% compared to 2015). Some 21% of Italians consumed organic wine at least once in 2016, representing a 2% increase over the previous year.

Growing Exports

According to this research, Italian organic wine exports accounted for 3.4% of total wine exports, but the trend is steadily growing thanks to the increasing popularity of organic produce.

The EU is the main destination for these exports (66% in value), followed by Germany (33%), and the United States (12%).

The main market players are optimistic for the immediate future. One in four surveyed predicts an increase of more than 10% in their revenue due to exports over the next three years, while 54% predict a growth of between 2% and 10%.
