Lidl Ramps Up Beer, Wine And Spirits Portfolios

Lidl UK is ramping up its product offerings in the categories of beer, wines and spirits, introducing a private label line comprised of eight craft beers, thedrinksbusiness.com reports.

The bottled beers in Hatherwood, Lidl’s new own label, will retail at between £0.99 and £1.99. These will become available in time for Christmas.

Its core wine range will expand from a choice of 60 to 80 in early 2016. Some of the new additions will be taken from its ‘Wine Cellar’ selection, which means they will be in stock more permanently. The majority of the new wines will be old-world ones.

Lidl UK’s head of beer, wines and spirits, Bel Hulme, said, “We’ve had a very tight core range, but this means we can reward the wines that have done well. It will allow us to listen to our customers, who vote with their feet. The Wine Cellar Portuguese Red Duoro, for example, went very well. We are looking to list that in the New Year and are working out the logistics.

“So far the old world has been a good place to start but the new world will be a focus next year. We want to continue to keep it fresh and the rotating concept means we have the freedom to do this. There is a lot of confidence in the range so we can be more adventurous.”

The company is also to add high-end spirits to its portfolio. Among these are three Glenalba scotches, which are 22 years old (£29.99), 25 years old (£34.99), and 34 years old (£49.99) respectively; and two Ben Bracken single malts which are 22 years old (£44.99) and 28 years old (£49.99) respectively.

Hortus, a craft gin will also be made available for £15.99, as well as Black Forest Vodka (£15.99).
