Lidl Wins 104 Medals At INDY International Wine Competition

Lidl's nascent US operation has won 104 medals for its wine selection at the 2017 INDY International Wine Competition.

The awards include 'Sparkling Wine of the Year' and five 'Best of Class' trophies, as well as six Double Gold, 17 Gold, 64 Silver, and 17 Bronze medals.

Adam Lapierre, Director of Wine for Lidl USA (pictured), said, “I am delighted by Lidl’s performance at the 2017 INDY International Wine Competition.

“The sheer number of awards speak for themselves and it’s incredibly exciting to have some of the country’s leading experts respond so enthusiastically to our wine range before we even open our doors. I am particularly excited that our Allini Prosecco DOCG has won Sparkling Wine of the Year – this is a great quality wine that we'll be offering at a market-beating price.”

Quality & Selection

Christian Butzke, INDY Chief Judge and Purdue’s wine professor, said, “This is a truly extraordinary performance by a US retailer.

“This type of dominance, in terms of both quality and selection, has never been seen at the INDY International Wine Competition in the past 25 years. Lidl’s performance is even more amazing as – according to comments from our professional wine judges – the 2017 INDY International wine entries were of unprecedentedly high quality across the board.”

This performance comes after Lidl’s top performance at the 2017 LA International Wine Competition, where the discounter was also the top performing retail exhibitor, with 101 medals earned, including 16 golds and 5 best of class.

Lidl only recently opened its first stores in the US, announcing a total of 20 US outlets, with the opening process commencing in June.
