Portuguese Beer Production Starts In Angola

Portuguese brewery Central de Cervejas has started production of Sagres beer in Angola in partnership with local beverage distribution company Sociedade de Distribuição de Bebidas de Angola (SODIBA).

According to Portuguese daily Jornal Economico, the logistics manager of Sagres, José Torres, told journalists that the aim is to reach a sales volume of around 353.5 million hectolitres per year, equalling the amount produced before the start of the economic crisis in Angola.

Torres expects that Sagres will be able to snatch a 5% share of the Angolan beer market.

Although a lot of the necessary raw material will initially be imported, the long-term goal is to source it locally.

Sagres will be the first international beer to be produced in Angola and will have the same branding as the beer sold on the Portuguese market.

The new $150 million factory is located in an industrial area of 40 hectares, some 60 kilometres from the capital Luanda. It has an installed annual production capacity of 144 million litres, which could be increased to 200 million litres per year.

The publication added that, besides Sagres beer, the factory will also produce other beverages, such as bottled waters, soft drinks, pulps and concentrates, as well as spirits and ready-to-drink beverages. In addition, there are plans to produce a 100% local beer brand called Luandina.
