Global wine production amounted to 267 million hectolitres (mhl) last year, down by 3% compared to 2015, according to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).
Italy is still the world’s leading producer (50.9 mhl), followed by France (43.5 mhl) and Spain (39.3 mhl).
There was a sharp drop in production in Argentina (9.4 mhl), Chile (10.1 mhl), Brazil (1.6 mhl) and South Africa (10.5 mhl).
World wine consumption was stable at 242 mhl, confirming the stagnation trend since 2009.
The US remains the biggest global wine consumer (31.8 mhl), followed by France (27.0 mhl), Italy (22.5 mhl), Germany (20.2 mhl) and China (17.3 mhl). A significant decrease in consumption in Hungary, Argentina and Romania was compensated by a rise in the US, China and Italy.
Early estimates for 2017 indicate an increase in production compared with 2016, except for Australia and New Zealand.
