Dunnes Stores Crowned Lead Irish Supermarket

Dunnes Stores is now Ireland's largest grocery retailer, according to market share figures from consumer thinktank Kantar Worldpanel.

In the 12 weeks ending 6 November, Dunnes has increased its share to 22.6%, beating out competitors such as Tesco and Lidl.

Rival SuperValu is close behind with 22.4% market share, with an increase of 2.3% in year-on-year sales.

Third-place Tesco clinched 21.4% of market share and has continued its upward trend, with value shares falling by only 0.6% in the past 12 weeks and volume sales ramping up compared to last year.

David Berry, director at Kantar Worldpanel, explained: “Dunnes’ strong performance is largely down to its continued success in encouraging larger shopping trips via its “Shop & Save” promotional campaign. Persuading shoppers to add one extra item to every basket – worth €3.20 on average – may not sound like much, but across the country this adds up to an additional €2.8 million each week."

Discounters Lidl and Aldi have continued to grow in the Irish market, increasing sales by 5.3% and 6.6% respectively.

Comparatively, their growth has slowed in Britain as Tesco resurged, with sales rising 2.2% in the 12 week period ending 6 November, the fastest growth in three years.
