Dutch Retailer Jumbo Launches Table Sauces Produced From Food Waste
Dutch retailer Jumbo has teamed up with Verspillingsfabriek (Waste Factory), an organisation that specialises in using waste food ingredients to make soups, sauces and spreads, to develop a new range of table sauces.
The sauces, which include a Tomato Ketchup, a Curry Ketchup and a BBQ Ketchup, were developed by the Jumbo Innovatie Lab in conjunction with Jumbo head chef Ton Verhaar. All are produced using waste tomatoes from Jumbo's supply chain, as well as other natural ingredients. They contain lower sugar and salt than other products on the market.
"Of course, ketchup is a well-known product, but ketchup developed from rescued fresh tomatoes tastes surprisingly different, "said Ed van de Weerd, Jumbo's commercial director. "We use formulas that contain much less sugar and salt, resulting in three delicious fresh ketchups. If you compare these with other ketchups on the market, you can really taste the difference. "
A Verspillingsfabriek spokesperson said that the collaboration will help customers "think about the theme of food waste, and make a conscious choice themselves by buying honest products with minimal environmental impact."
All ketchups in the range come in 200ml packaging and are priced at €1.99 each.
