German supermarket chain Edeka has been awarded a 'Platinum' status for its E Centre by the German Society for Sustainable Building, the DGNB.
This represents the highest DGNB award for sustainable buildings.
The E Centre is located on the outskirts of the town of Gaimerscheim, near Ingolstadt.
The DGNB’s criteria in this year's audit included the use of materials, the energy efficiency of the building, its socio-cultural functionality and the quality of the applied technology on site.
The building's energy is regulated through integrated heating and cooling systems and a storage process called ‘concrete core activation’, which utilises ongoing heat exchange resulting in a near constant room temperature.
The E Centre also uses energy-saving smart LED lights, which respond to existing daylight.
