Edeka Südwest Awarded For Supporting Food Banks
Deutsche Tafel, Germany's national association of food banks, has awarded Edeka Südwest the ‘Tafel-Teller’ (food bank plate) for its special engagement and support.
The retailer has received this prize at the annual Bundestafeltreffen (national food bank meeting) for the third year in a row.
“We are very happy with this award”, said Christhard Deutscher, head of corporate communications at Edeka Südwest.
“We and our merchants have been some of the biggest supporters of food bank initiatives in the south-west of Germany for many years now. Many helpers get involved as drivers, consultants or service providers for the food banks in their free time. We owe them our thanks and appreciation.”
Edeka Südwest is currently in the middle of its fifth fundraising campaign in southern and western Germany. In cooperation with the Deutsche Tafel, Edeka sells shopping bags filled with durable food to its customers, who in turn can leave them at one of the supermarket’s collection points.
The pre-packaged bags are sold for €5 each and contain food such as spaghetti, pasta sauce, flour, oatmeal, jam and chocolate. The collected food donations are passed on from the supermarkets to local food banks.
Thousands of pre-packaged bags with basic foods have already been collected in recent years. Edeka Südwest also announced that it is donating an additional €30,000 to regional food bank associations.
