Eroski Introduces Paper Alternative To Single-Use Plastic Bags

Spanish retailer Eroski has launched a new sustainable paper bag to offer customers an alternative to single-use plastic bags.

The new bags are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and are being rolled out in Eroski's hypermarkets from this week onwards.

'Sustainable Alternative'

"We offer this more sustainable alternative as part of our commitment to protecting the environment and as a response to the demands of our customers, who through their different participation channels have sent us their suggestions," said Eroski's director of health and sustainability, Alejandro Martínez Berriochoa.

The retailer will progressively implement a more complete, varied and sustainable range of solutions suitable for all types of purchases, to replace conventional plastic bags, it said.

Marine Pollution

Berriochoa added, "Every year between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes of plastics ends up in the sea, and it is estimated that between 60 and 80% of marine garbage is from plastics.

"Our goal is to achieve by 2025 a reduction of at least 20% of the tonnes of single-use plastics we currently use."

The retailer plans to introduce compostable bags as well as reusable bags made of 55% recycled plastic.
