ESM Meets...Elke Moebius

Web Exclusive: ESM travelled to Düsseldorf to meet Elke Moebius, director of InterCool / InterMopro / InterMeat, one of the premier trade shows on the German retail calendar.

The annual InterCool / InterMopro / InterMeat trade show, held at Messe Düsseldorf between September 12th to 15th, was an ideal showcase for exhibitors and buyers alike to meet up and make deals at one of Europe's busiest shows of its kind this year. ESM sat down with show organiser Elke Moebius to get her views on the event and it was clear to see that she was delighted with how the show was progressing. "My impressions are pretty positive, the first day I have to admit was a bit slow, but the second day was really good – very positive. The feedback I got from exhibitors was really positive."

With three target areas, refrigeration/freezing (InterCool), dairy products (InterMopro) and meat products (InterMeat), the event provides a space where multiple levels of commerce and an extensive variety of deals can be struck. For the first time at the show this year there is an area especially dedicated to the promotion of sustainability in business practice and the encouragement of attendees to be kinder to the environment. Moebius believes that like any new concept "people always need time to get used to it," but now that it has entered the life of the show organisers intend on it becoming a staple feature in years to come. "The newly introduced EcoCare ceremony proved to be a big hit with visitors," she explains, "as pioneering businesses like REWE, which introduced its first 'green' supermarket in Berlin last year, was praised and rewarded for its ground breaking approach to the environment."

As regards new trends that were evident at this year's event, "convenience is king nowadays, as much in the meat sector as in frozen, due in part to single people preferring to freeze smaller portions for use at a later date. There is also a major trend towards healthier products, with gluten and allergen free items proving especially popular."
