Esselunga To Enable In-Store Payments Via Smartphone

Italian retailer Esselunga will introduce the Satispay app, which allows customers to make payments with their smartphone, in all of its 154 stores by the end of 2017, according to Corriere Della Sera.

The retailer will be rolling out the system by the end of the summer, with the Segrate store being the first to introduce the new technology.

The creator of Satispay, Alberto Dalmasso, told Corriere that the app works with all smartphone brands and all major banks. Once downloaded, the app is linked to the user’s bank account and it is possible to define a weekly spending limit.

When customers arrive at the checkout, they just need to launch the app, select the store, and enter the amount that has been calculated at the till. If the figure is correct, the transaction does not need any further approval from the Esselunga staff.

App Expansion

Over the last four years, Satispay has been used by over 16,000 Italian retailers, as well as small bars and restaurants. There is a fixed commission of €0.20 for payments over €10.00, while lower receipts have no cost.

The number of active users of the app has reached 136,000 and, on average, each user conducts 6.5 transactions per month.

The company plans to complete a €20 million capital increase in August, ahead of an international expansion project, planned for 2018, that will start in Germany.
