Aldi Commits To Sustainability For Its Private Label Chocolate

In a move that has pleased Fairtrade activists globally, German chain Aldi has committed to using only sustainably obtained cocoa for its private label chocolate (and other cocoa-rich products) in its domestic supermarkets, Reuters reports.

This  pledge represents a bettering of what was already a respectable figure: beforehand, 90 per cent of its private label products in German stores which contain significant amounts of cocoa were Fairtrade-certified.

Beyond chocolate, the move extends to, for example, own label chocolate ice cream and certain own label breakfast cereals.

Furthermore, the grocer has similar ambitions for its American market, with Aldi US issuing a statement saying, “We are currently working to convert all cocoa used in our private-label chocolates, cookies and seasonal confectionery, as well as products with high amounts of cocoa, to certified sustainable sources by the end of 2020 using the following certification standards: Rainforest Alliance, UTZ Certified or Fair Trade.”
