Finnish confectionery giant Fazer has announced that it will redesign its chocolate-covered Kinapuffar product following a complaint that the current image used on the packaging was racist. The packaging for the confectionery features a caricature of a yellow Chinese face with a red pointed rice hat.
A journalist working for the Swedish newspaper Helsinborgs Dagblad (HD) wrote that that "to joke and laugh at Asians seems to be the only racism which can pass by unremarked". He added that the packaging was no better that the "Nogger black" - an ice cream product which caused anger among a number of Afro-Swedish groups a few years ago; the product was later withdrawn from the market. "We have taken the feedback that we received on board and are going to change the packaging," said Fazer's Sofia Liljefors-Edlun
No decision has been made by the confectionery giant on how it plans to redesign the packaging. (22 Sept)
