Amazon Announces Three New Renewable Energy Projects

Amazon has announced plans to invest in three new renewable energy projects to achieve its target of switching to 80% renewable energy by 2024, and to 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Two solar projects will be located in Illinois and Northern Virginia in the US, while the third one will be set up in Spain.

The new projects will help the company to generate renewable energy for its fulfilment network and Amazon Web Services data centres, which support Amazon and millions of AWS customers globally.

'A Critical Step'

Kara Hurst, director of sustainability at Amazon, said, "We’re committed to investing in renewable energy as a critical step toward addressing our carbon footprint globally.

“Earlier this year, we announced The Climate Pledge, setting a goal to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net-zero carbon by 2040."

Upon completion, the three plants will generate a total of around 700,000 MWh of renewable energy on an annual basis.

'Renewable Energy Projects'

So far, Amazon has launched more than 70 renewable energy projects that are equipped to provide over 1,900 MW of renewable capacity, Amazon said in its statement.

The energy projects include 21 wind and solar farms and more than 50 solar rooftops installed in its fulfilment and sorting centres across the globe.

Amazon has also launched a new sustainability website to track the progress of the company towards its climate goals.

The website offers information on the company's carbon footprint and other sustainability metrics to measure its progress towards 'The Climate Pledge'.
