French Dairy Workers Want AOP Status
Those employed in the French dairy industry are campaigning for their produce to be eligible for Appellation d’Origine Protégée status.
A campaign lobbying for creams, butters and cheeses to be considered for the badge, which was introduced in 1990, has been launched.
The AOP signification represents a guarantee of quality and location of origin affirmed by the European Union.
Dairy farmers are keen for legislation conducive to achieving this as it precludes food-makers making false 'made in' claims on packaging.
Fifteen AOP categories have been proposed to authorities – the butter of Charentes-Poitou, the respective bries of Meaux and Melun, cantal, morbier, ossau-iraty, reblochon, the butter of Isigny, the cream of Isigny, chaource, neufchâte, livarot, pont-l’évêque, and the camembert of Normandy.
