Arla Introduces Sustainable Packaging For Skyr Yoghurt Buckets

Dairy giant Arla has announced that it has introduced skyr yoghurt 1-kilogram buckets in a new packaging that reduces plastic consumption by 40%.

The initiative will ensure a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions for the company, which sells approximately 17 million skyr buckets each year across Europe.

Initially, the new packaging will be rolled out in five of Arla’s core markets: Denmark, Germany, Sweden, UK and the Netherlands.

'A Good Example'

Director of sustainable packaging at Arla, Lise Berg Kildemark, said, “Going forward we will look to use the sustainable bucket in other countries and for other products as well.

“This packaging is a good example of how we invite our customers and suppliers to be part of the sustainable agenda, where circularity is the common goal.”

The new packaging uses more cardboard with 100% recyclable buckets and lids.

Each bucket now contains 16 grams less plastic compared with the previous packaging, the company added.

The cardboard used in the new buckets meets food safety standards and is made of certified raw materials from responsibly managed forests.

'Vital Part Of The Solution'

Kildemark added, “At Arla, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact, and sustainable packaging is a vital part of the solution.

“Last year we converted more than one billion packaging items to sustainable materials across Europe. With our new skyr buckets, we take the next step.”
