Asparagus from the Bavaria region in Germany has received a protected designation of origin (PDO) as 'Abensberger Spargel', ensuring its status in Europe.
Bavaria’s minister of agriculture Helmut Brunner announced that the asparagus has indeed been recognised in the EU register of regional specialties, finally receiving the coveted protected geographical indication after a five-year procedure.
Only asparagus from the 'Sandgürtel' region between Siegenburg, Neustadt, Abensberg and Langquaid will be allowed to carry the designation.
The 'Abensberger Spargel' is the 24th Bavarian specialty to receive the honour. Others include 'Allgäuer Bergkäse', 'Bayerisches Bier' and 'Nürnberger Bratwürste'. “Thanks to the designation our Bavarian produce and its traditional quality will be safeguarded and recognised,” the minister said.
