DHL, Kaufland Join Forces To Reduce CO2 Emissions

DHL and Kaufland are currently collaborating on a number of areas across their operations to jointly reduce CO2 emissions.

DHL Global Forwarding, the air and sea freight specialist of Deutsche Post DHL Group, enables its customers to completely decarbonise their sea transports by using sustainable marine fuels for general cargo shipments (LCL) and full container loads (FCL).

Kaufland is one of its first major customers in Germany to use the GoGreen Plus service for all FCL transports, thereby reducing its CO2 emissions by around 12,000 tonnes annually.

Long-Term Collaborators

DHL Global Forwarding has been working with Kaufland for over twelve years and is responsible for the overseas transport of non-food items.

The main transport route between China and Germany is used for 70% of these transports, and by neutralising its sea freight transports, Kaufland can reduce its CO2 emissions.

"Our service for the use of sustainable marine fuels is very well received by our customers," said Felix Heger, DHL Global Forwarding, and added, "The demand for green transport solutions is steadily increasing as companies are increasingly aware of their ecological responsibility and are assuming responsibility. We are pleased with Kaufland's decision, it takes well-known and strong partners who lead the way with us and show that sustainability and profitability are not mutually exclusive."

Alexander Frohmann, managing director of transport logistics international at Kaufland, stated, "We have been working successfully with DHL Global Forwarding for many years and are looking forward to taking the next step together. With Sustainable Marine Fuel, we make ship transport more sustainable because we reduce CO2 emissions and at the same time can continue to offer our customers products from all over the world."

CO2 Emissions Reduction

Kaufland has set itself the goal of reducing its operational greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2030 compared to 2019.

Various measures to reduce, avoid, or compensate for CO2 emissions in the company and in the supply chain serve to achieve these goals.

For DHL Global Forwarding, sustainable marine fuel is an important lever for reducing the environmental impact of ocean freight transport. The company ensures that the waste-based biofuels meet strict sustainability standards and are among the cleanest biofuels on the market.

In accordance with its 'Burn Less - Burn Clean' principle, DHL Global Forwarding is constantly optimising the CO2 efficiency of its transport network, fleet, and properties.

In order to achieve its sustainability goals, Deutsche Post DHL Group plans to invest €7 billion in climate-neutral logistics solutions by 2030.

By then, 30% of its fuel requirement should be covered by sustainable fuels.
