EU Supports Measures To Protect Kiwi Crop

The European Commission states that the EU has approved an array of intervention measures to combat a dangerous bacteria threatening kiwi crops in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal.

The EU’s phytosanitary committee has studied several proposals intended to tackle the bacteria known as Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae, or PSA. Though the pathogen is no threat to human health, it has the potential to wipe out complete crops. France, Spain and Greece are among the world’s largest kiwi producing countries, respectively with 70,000, 23,000 and 116,000 tons. The infection has not yet been detected in these countries.

The new measures will be implemented this month. EU members can ask for regular inspections, financial aid and the designation of ‘protected area’, granting certain agricultural regions priority status.   (1 Nov)
