Mondi To Manufacture Surgical Face Masks In German Facility

Packaging group Mondi has announced plans to set up new production facilities in its factory in Gronau, Germany to manufacture surgical face masks and melt-blown, non-woven fabric.

A single thread of the melt blown non-woven fabric is twenty times thinner than a human hair, and provides better filtering function than cotton, Mondi added.

The company will supply 50% of this fabric to other face mask manufacturers across Europe.

'Competitive Local Supply'

Jürgen Schneider, managing director of Mondi personal care components (PCC), added, “Our people have the needed know-how and expertise in working with these materials and the technology required.

“The in-house production capability of all substantial components positions us to build up a long-term competitive local supply.”

The facility will be equipped to produce one million surgical face masks a day, Mondi said.

The initiative is part of the company’s efforts to meet the increasing demand for face masks from health authorities, businesses, and consumers in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

In April, Mondi converted its production line in Gronau to produce soft, elastic straps used in face masks for medical professionals and consumers across the globe.
