Peru Showcases The World’s Top Superfoods At New York’s Summer Fancy Food Show

Peru presented a selection of the world’s top superfoods from their country at the Summer Fancy Food Show in NYC, which took place from June 25-27.

This year, the pavilion’s gourmet offerings featured a variety of ready-to-eat products and fine dining foods, as well as many high quality ingredients for the food service industry and manufacturers.

“Peru has an incredible diversity of natural and healthy foods, we wanted to make sure people know all that Peru has to offer and how to make meals using these ingredients, both for the home cook and the professional chef,” says Conrado Falco, Director of the Trade Commission of Peru in New York.

In 2016, the USA imported close to $1.5 billion in agricultural products from Peru (part of the almost $6 billion Peru exports yearly in food-related products), including “Superfoods”:
• Sacha inchi, a large ancient seed packed with omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids.
• Maca, a great source of calcium and phosphorus for healthy bones.
• Quinoa is a core superfood ingredient in many popular foods found in the USA, including cereals and energy bars.

A few of Peru’s largest annual exports to the world include: mineral and antioxidant-rich grapes ($660 million) and blueberries ($244 million); high-fiber asparagus, which thrives in Peru’s incredibly fertile soils($571 million); ever-popular avocados, high in healthy fats ($397 million) and mangoes loaded with vitamins A and C ($200 million).

Peru is the number one provider of artichokes to the USA, and also is home to a wide array of organic foods, such as coffee, bananas, and cacao; exporting these products around the world.

Peruvian companies are widely recognized for their social and environmental responsibility standards. They take care of the local people and communities engaged in agricultural activities and the foods produced follow ethical practices that respect their treasured ancient lands while also embracing modern techniques to ensure sustainability.
