FrieslandCampina Consolidation In Romania To Result In 130 Job Losses

FrieslandCampina Romania, the local subsidiary of the Dutch dairy giant with the same name, has announced that it intends to consolidate its cheese business with the loss of up to 130 jobs.

The dairy processor cited "tough market conditions" for its decision to relocate its cheese production and packing units at sites in Carei and Targu Mures to a single site in Baciu.

By relocating its production facility, the company hopes to improve efficiency and performance, which will enable FrieslandCampina to continue to invest in the Napolact brand and in technology.

Around 130 people are currently working at the plant in Carei. The company stressed that they will receive full support under the terms of the collective labour agreement, including a social plan and assistance in finding future career opportunities.

The group said that it will redistribute savings into technical and product innovation as well as support for its Napolact brand in the market.

"Consolidating our cheese activities is part of our roadmap for Romania, which involves fundamentally improving our performance as our current production footprint is no longer sustainable. Our factory in Carei is operating at less than 30% of its capacity. This change is a necessary step in facing market challenges, preserving and investing in our local brands and ensuring business continuity," Jan Willem Kivits, MD for FrieslandCampina Romania, said.

The relocation is expected to be finished by January 2015.
