FrieslandCampina's Solar Programme Extends To More Farms

An ambitious project by dairy giant FrieslandCampina to encourage dairy farmers to install solar panels on their roofs has been extended.

In a statement, the company said that the number of dairy farmers that will receive solar panels through the FrieslandCampina Solar programme has 'more than doubled' compared to last year.

The total number of dairy farms participating in the scheme has now risen to 772, the company said, with a total of 840,000 solar panels now set to be installed.

Speed Up The Process

The first roofs have been installed by sustainable solutions provider GroenLeven, and the company is hopeful to have 50 roofs completed by the end of 2018, and then speed up the rollout over the coming months, at a rate of 20 roofs per week.

It estimates that around 22,000 solar panels will be installed per week as the rollout progresses.

As well as the 772 dairy farms participating in this programme, more than 2,200 FrieslandCampina farmers members have already installed solar panels on their own initiative.

'Recent research from students from the University of Amsterdam shows that the solar power that can be generated on the roofs of FrieslandCampina members can provide 12% of the total Dutch domestic electricity needs,' the company said in a statement.
