Grape Shortage in Priorat

There are concerns over the lack of grapes in the Spanish wine-making region Priorat, according to reports.

Due to increased demand, wineries in the region have of late been shelling out between €3 and €6 for a kilo of grapes.

Comparatively, Grenache typically carried a market value of approximately €1.4 for the same weight as recently as 2013 (according to reserach carried out by Catalonia’s Technological Wine Park).

The price of red wine from Priorat may increase in some cases; the area's wines are generally high-end, and thus relatively costly anyway.

A spokesperson from Llagostera, one of the leading estates in question, told Decanter.com, "We produce 30,000 bottles of our Les Crestes wine, for example, and we would like to produce 60,000 bottles, but the shortage means this is not possible.”
