Groupe Casino Signs New Animal Welfare Partnership

French retailer Groupe Casino has signed a partnership with three animal-rights groups, pledging itself further to maintaining high standards of animal welfare in its supply chains.

The three groups are the Fondation Droit Animal, Éthique et Sciences (LFDA), Compassion in World Farming France (CIWF France), and l’Association Œuvre d’Assistance aux Bêtes d’Abattoirs (OABA). Casino describes the agreement as an 'ambitious collaboration', which will feature the development of a labelling system to inform the shopper more comprehensively of animal-welfare standards on a per-SKU basis.

The supermarket company notes that its banner Monoprix was the first in France to commit to no longer selling caged eggs. More broadly, it has a three-year plan to implement this across all its chains in France by 2020, with Franprix and Leader Price following suit.

It describes its new relationship with LFDS, CIWF France and the OABA as an effort to persuade its customers to ‘choose products which respect the wellbeing of animals.’
