Tesco Seeking To Reduce Emissions By 40% With New Refrigeration Systems

UK retailer Tesco is converting more than 1,200 of its stores to Honeywell refrigeration systems as part of the company's plan to reduce carbon emissions.

The conversion will take place over the next three years, with installation in the first 60 stores already completed.

In November 2015, Tesco committed to reducing carbon emissions from refrigeration by up to 26%, however, this new system could see Tesco lower its carbon footprint by up to 40%.

Sustainability Goals

“We set aggressive sustainability goals and are committed to achieving them without impacting our customers,” said Matthew Reeves-Smith, group head of refrigeration & HVAC at Tesco.

The stores will be fitted with Honeywell's Solstice N40 refrigerant, which was installed in over 2,000 supermarkets in 2016.

“More and more supermarket companies are using Solstice N40 in large-scale store conversions, as it is the ideal solution to help meet their energy efficiency and sustainability goals,” said Robert Kebby, refrigeration global business manager for Honeywell.

As part of the company's ongoing sustainability strategy, Tesco announced last week that it plans to source 100% of its electricity from solar power by 2030, and be completely carbon neutral by 2050.
