Iceland Ceases Sale Of Bananas In Plastic Bags

Frozen foods retailer Iceland has ceased the sale of bananas in plastic packaging, with the retailer confident that the move will help it save around 10 million plastic bags' worth of packaging a year.

The UK retailer is trialling the use of recyclable paper bands for pre-packaged bananas in three of its stores, ahead of a rollout to a further 120 stores.

The bananas will now be packaged in a paper wrap, developed from recycled paper, with the packaging bearing the Plastic Free Trust Mark, launched by A Plastic Planet, a group that has campaigned for the introduction of 'plastic-free aisles' in store.

"People have become so used to buying their products wrapped in plastic, or indeed using plastic bags for loose produce, and this has to stop if we are to turn down the tap on plastics," commented Richard Walker, Iceland managing director.

We’re creating impetus for that change in consumer habits through the use of innovative solutions.”
