IDG-Led Initiative Prevents 125,000 Tonne Of Supply Chain Waste In The UK

Over thirty UK food and drink companies worked in collaboration to prevent some 125,000 tones of food being wasted in supply chains, according to figures from IDG.

The 34 companies which took part in the IDG led initiative, are on track to meet their target of preventing 200,000 tones of supply chain waste by the end of 2014.

Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive, IGD, said: “We know shoppers want to waste less and expect our industry to do more to tackle waste in the supply chain, so we’re bringing the industry together to share best practice and find innovative solutions for all.

“The most effective way of reducing waste is to prevent it from happening in the first place. We’re encouraging businesses to prevent waste through planning better, designing products and packaging differently, and working together to improve forecasting and processes"

Karen Whitworth, supply chain director, Sainsbury’s, and ECR UK Product & Packaging Waste Workgroup co-chair, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and is testament to the hard work from all of the companies partnering up on this high profile consumer issue.

All of the companies involved in the project, including the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury's, Mondelez and Kelloggs, have created a new online guide so that suppliers can develop their own waste tackling solutions.
