FMCG Sales See 3% Boost In Spain In Q1

Sales of FMCG items grew by 3.1 per cent in Spain during the first quarter of 2016.

The figures, reported by revistainfoterail.com and obtained from global consultancy firm Nielsen, stated that Spain's FMCG industry outperformed the European average of 1.5 per cent. However, Norway, Sweden, Hungary Slovakia, Poland and Turkey all saw higher growth Spain.

Not only are Spanish consumers are spending more despite the current political uncertainty in the country, they're buying larger volumes as well, the study found, as the volume of units sold grew by 2.2 per cent. This is the first time since the first quarter of 2014 that there has been a significant growth in volume.

Price-wise, there has been a small increase of 0.8 per cent.

Asis González de Castejón, director of Nielsen's Distribution Studies, pointed out that the market needs this type of growth, as it allows retailers to "innovate and energise their offer, surprising consumers with products that will solve their day-to-day needs."
