Mercadona To Buy 850 Tonnes Of Local Figs In 2020

Spanish retailer Mercadona has announced that it is to buy 850 tonnes of figs from local producers in 2020.

This is 30% more than the 650 tonnes of fresh figs purchased by the retailer in 2019.

The move is part of the company’s pledge to offer locally grown fruit and vegetables in its assortment.

Mercadona will source fresh figs from producers in the Valencian Community, Catalonia, Castilla y León and the Canary Islands.

It will collaborate with 10 local suppliers in these regions to source fresh figs, which will be sold in more than 1,600 Mercadona stores.

In 2019, Mercadona's purchased Spanish products worth more than €19.9 billion.

The retailer collaborates with approximately 9,500 farmers, 12,000 fishermen and 6,700 ranchers on its local products assortment.
