Mercadona Completes Construction Of New Logistics Block In Basque Country

Spanish retailer Mercadona has announced that it has completed the construction of its new logistics block in the Basque Country.

The company has invested more than €187 million in the project, which has seen the creation of 480 new jobs.

This includes the creation of 120 jobs and an investment of €17 million in 2020 to finish the construction.

'Health And Safety'

Fran Maeztu, director of human resources for Mercadona in the Basque Country, explained, “Our main objective in logistics is to avoid overexertion to workers so that they carry out their activity in total health and safety.

“In addition, after the creation of 120 jobs this year in our logistics block in Vitoria-Gasteiz, we have a workforce of 480 people involved in the project to whom we offer stable and indefinite contracts, with training by the company and the possibility of internal promotions."

The logistics block, located in the Jundiz industrial estate in Vitoria-Gasteiz, supplies to supermarkets in Euskadi, Navarra, La Rioja, Cantabria and Burgos.

Mercadona operates 21 stores in the Basque Country, with a workforce of 2,045 employees.

'Fully Automated' Facility

Melika Dezfoli, the coordinator of Mercadona's logistics block, said that “the new warehouses for refrigerated products and dry products have been put into operation” in 2020.

“The latter is fully automated and eliminates overstrain throughout the process, from the reception of the merchandise to the formation of the pallets that will be dispatched to the stores; it also guarantees the correct handling of the products, ensuring their quality,” Dezfoli added.
