Mondelēz Reports Progress On Its 2020 Sustainability Goals

Confectionary giant Mondelēz International has reported that it has made significant advancements in achieving its sustainability goals for 2020.

These include efforts towards sustainable agriculture, environment footprint goals and the expansion of its healthy lifestyle programmes.

The food group reported that it achieved 96% traceability of its palm oil suppliers, while adhering completely to production standards set by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

In June of this year, the RSPO had suspended Nestlé's membership for three weeks, as it failed to provide a report on ensuring the use of certified sustainable palm oil.

Goals And Achievements

The report stated that 35% of Mondelēz's cocoa production is now sustainably sourced.

Cocoa Life, its foundation for sustainably-sourced cocoa, has reached out to 120,500 farmers in 1,085 communities since its launch in 2008.

The group has also reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 10% from its 2013 baseline, which is in line with its commitment to a 15% reduction by 2020.

In its efforts towards reducing plastic pollution, the group has reported to have eliminated 53,500 tonnes of packaging. This puts the company in a favourable position to achieve its target of 65,000 tonnes by 2020.

CEO and chairman of Mondelēz, Dirk Van de Put emphasised that transparency is an important factor for the group as customers are paying attention to how brands operate.

"We know people are increasingly interested in leading healthier and more sustainable lifestyles. As such, they’re becoming more deliberate in their food choices, looking at the connection between the foods they buy and their impact on the planet, and are seeking out brands that have purpose and are transparent," he added.
