Nestlé Develops Vegan Cheese And Bacon For Burgers

Nestlé has announced that it has developed plant-based cheese and bacon alternatives that will complement its existing vegan burger patties.

With the new development, the food giant has produced vegan alternatives for all three essential ingredients required for a bacon cheeseburger.

The move is part of Nestlé’s efforts to accelerate the transformation of its portfolio to include more innovative, and sustainable products.

It also in line with its pledge to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Branded as 'PB triple play', the product will be initially rolled out to professional clients such as restaurant and foodservice operators in 2020.

'Nutritious And Sustainable'

Nestlé CEO, Mark Schneider, commented, "More and more consumers are looking for delicious, nutritious and sustainable plant-based options when they dine out. We have now raised the bar by developing a ‘PB triple play’ of ingredients for an all-time classic: the bacon cheeseburger.

"We’re continuing to make good on our promise to offer consumers food that is right for them and right for the planet."

The vegan cheddar cheese alternative replicates the texture and delicious, rich taste of dairy cheese.

The bacon alternative turns crispy and chewy when cooked, similar to animal-based bacon, and has the same flavour, Nestlé said.

When compared with a standard bacon cheeseburger, the vegan alternative is free of cholesterol, high in fibre, and has significantly less fat and saturated fat content.

Product Development

Nestlé leveraged its R&D expertise and proprietary technology to develop vegan cheese and bacon, which combine natural ingredients such as plant-based proteins, fibres, and oils.

Chefs and food scientists collaborated with foodservice experts to tailor the products for use in professional kitchens, taking into account their specific cooking and serving requirements, the food giant said.

In September of this year, the food Nestlé launched plant-based burgers and grounds in the United States and Switzerland.
