Pet Food Category Continues To Grow In Spain

According to research conducted by Alimarket, the Spanish pet food sector maintained its growth in 2015, with an increase of approximately 4 per cent in retail sales.

Again, cat food and snacks experienced above average growth. Food products for small dog breeds were also key players in the category. This sales increase especially benefitted big brands such as Affinity, Nestlé Purina and Mars, which all had successful launches during the year.

Brands like Royal Canin, Visán, Nanta or Cotécnica are also growing and working on innovations.

Major Spanish retailer, El Corte Inglés has even launched a chain of shops just for pet supplies called Fred & Rita.

However, there has been stagnation in the domestic market for food for small pets, such as birds and rodents,  meaning that brands are increasingly looking to the export market.
